      model rocketry can teach our young people. As much as we enrich our classroom
      STEM lessons, the payoffs for our efforts are often more
      conspicuously found outside of school (on the flying field) rather than
      on the obligatory standardized test. I'm impressed and happy that
      the winner of TARC this year is a 4-H club. In our Inspiring Others
      section below, a cadet has written a remarkable report on how to use
      <a

      summer camps are a blast when they fly them. All of these
      students are applying their skills and learning the relevance of
      science and engineering as they fly rockets through their respective
      organizations. Informal education is still education, and I applaud those
      of you who are supporting these groups and wish you well this summer.

      Competition event at the Finals.  In addition to their cash prize of
      $9,500 for themselves and $2000 for their 4-H group, the three students
      on the Georgetown 4-H team will be traveling to Paris in June as the
      guests of the Raytheon Company to fly against the winners of the
      TARC-equivalent event in the UK and France at the Paris Air Show, which
      will be the biggest aerospace show and exhibition in the world

      highly successful combined effort of students, teachers, parents, and NAR
      mentors that can be proud of their achievements.  Any team that
      completed a TARC 2013 qualification flight met all the
      educational and NAR outreach goals of the TARC program, even if they did

      at the Finals award ceremony the Administrator of NASA, General Charlie
      Bolden.  We had as our guests at the Finals the team from Noshiro
      High School in Noshiro, Japan that had won the Japanese TARC
      event. They flew their rocket with the US teams.  We hope to
      see the Japanese winners at the international fly-off in future
      years.  <o:p></o:p></span></p>

      color:black'>We also used an alternate team at the Finals for the first
      time in a while. The #1 alternate (St Vincent St Mary HS of Akron
      Ohio) was called Tuesday morning of Finals week when an opening suddenly
      appeared, had their travel booked in two hours, and finished 13th! 
      This is indicative of the depth of talent and enthusiasm throughout the
      ranks of all the teams that entered TARC. 735 teams (our most since
      2003, and representing over 4000 students) entered TARC 2013 from 44
      states, 470 made at least one qualification flight attempt (our most
      ever), and the 100 teams that came to the Finals represented 29 states
      plus the US Virgin Islands. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

      "ignites" students' interest and understanding for what
      they learn in these fields in the classroom in a way that few other
      activities can do.  When we offer a national program that offers
      hands-on mentoring at the local level by expert volunteers (that's our
      NAR TARC Mentors) and culminates with a highly-organized,
      professionally-run Finals event (thanks to the 105 NAR range crew that
      made this happen), we can truly make a difference, and we are.  Thank
      you for what each of you contributed to TARC 2013 as a publicist and
      mentor.  This is "paying forward" on a scale that would
      have made Harry Stine proud, and in a way that is perfectly aligned with
      one of the most important missions of the NAR -- educational outreach.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

      said: "The Rocketry Challenge is a unique initiative to ignite
      enthusiasm for our sectors from some of the brightest young talent across

      today and I look forward to seeing The Royal Liberty School team at the

      as aerospace engineers do.  The challenge is not intended to be
      easy, but it is well within the capabilities of secondary school students
      with a good background in science and math, and some craftsmanship
      skills.<br>

      Matthew Batson, Luke Chandler, Dumitru Vulper, Chandler Benstock and Josh
      Compton from The Royal Liberty School will represent the UK at the
      International Rocketry Challenge against the US and French winning teams
      at the Paris Airshow in June. They also win an all-expenses paid trip to
      Disneyland Paris and an exclusive tour of the Airbus A380 facility in
      Toulouse.<br>

      In 2001, the NAR's scholarship and Robert L. Cannon educational awards
      were inaugurated at NARAM.  Three NAR members received scholarships
      and two educators received Cannon award grants.  For 2002, there were
      five Cannon awards and five scholarships presented to recipients. 
      In 2003, there were four scholarships awarded to NAR members and three
      Cannon award winners.  Currently, we award 10 $1000 NAR scholarships
      and 10 $500 Cannon winners per year. <br>

      2013 will be June 1st. </b> Awards are announced at the annual meet
