Subject: BP packaging issue

I'm not sure if everyone is on or reads the TRA mailing list. Below is some good info..

Tony

Folks,

I contacted GOEX powder over a FFFG issue today. I told them that I had a can
that I sample tested and it burned very slowly. They conceded that there was one
or two runs produced 3/11 that had been mis packaged as FFFG when in effect the
powder dispensed had a "significantly less" amount of excellerant than FFFG, and
that it would effect bullet velocities if used in muzzleloaders, but the effects
were nominal in rifle cartridge use due to higher pressure. I told him that I
was not using FFFG for sporting firearms, and I could hear an "O, what ARE you
using it in?" in his voice, so I merely shrugged it off as hobby rocket use.

When I tested a teaspoon of this powder by setting it off with an electric
match, it burned for 2 - 3 seconds. Obviously, this is a quite unacceptable burn
rate in our rocketry hobby. I found out the hard way this last weekend, which is
why I decided to test the burn rate this morning.

I would advise that ya'll learn from my scar tissue and spread the word to your
members that if they have any GOEX FFFG mfg 03/2011 to test burn a small
portion. If it goes off in a flash, its a good run. If it does what mine did,
don't use it for ejection charges. Take it from me, ballistic 80 lb Maxi Maggs
with dual altimeters and 98mm motor hardware is not much fun.

John L, I copied you on this list to let the general NAR membership know as
well. I will notify the L3CC.

Pat G
