LARPD Lupe Launch

On Friday, August 6, LUNAR members assisted with the launch activities for the annual LARPD rocket camp. Joe and Judy Heckenbach, James Marino and Richard Hagen arrived early and met Erik, the energetic student teacher who conducted the camp. We had all brought "show and tell" items that were very popular with the arriving students. The display included James's "Dark Side of the Moon" returning from its recent successful L3 flight at Black Rock and the Judy Heckenbach's impeccably finished "Flash," a purple three motor cluster, and Joe's "Double Star" two-stage rocket. I had my red, white and blue Endeavor, my "roof wrecking" Firefly and a small brown Chihuahua named Lupe. I know the old "show and tell" term has been replaced with the more PC "sharing", but the rockets and the dog got rave reviews from all the attendees.

We set up four model rocket pads near the Northwest corner of the field to accommodate the moderate morning wind. Approximately fifteen young rocketeers arrived with a smaller compliment of parents and helpers. The students had all assembled Fireflies (looked like Estes, but no mfg. ID) as a part of the camp activities. Great creativity was demonstrated by the students in the construction of the rockets particularly in the area of fin orientation and location as well as the inclusion (or omission) of various optional items such as launch lugs and motor tubes.
